October 25 had the perfect reason to get out of bed (even though it was in the evening). [And Rose happened to be on the Victory Doll float this year as a pirate.]

Ghouls Gone Wild 2008 Parade.

I used Google Earth to map out the parade route and locate where possible un-crowded sections would be (easier to keep track of kiddos). Found a candidate parking lot nearby to reduce walk time and we were set. When we arrived the only people in the parking lot were the friends we were meeting! We had the Gyno building to ourselves (GE didn't show me what the building was at 10th and Harvey).

After the parade passed I was driven by the idea of seeing it again (as Cian didn't get to see mom as she passed... wrong side of the street). We dumped our candy haul off at the van and then proceeded on foot ~4-5 blocks.

When I came up with this idea the parade was moving SLOW... probably waiting for people to make the corner. BUT when I started out with the kids they were going a pretty good pace. One kid gave up and I proceeded to carry him. The other ("I'm a good runner from PE class") became my pace car.

We managed to catch up to mom and see the skeletons and "the ball" (as the kids called it) again. I even got to check out Coffee Slingers before they closed! (Another business I found on GE while researching the parade route).

I'm looking forward to next year!! (And so are the kids... they are talking about what they will be in the parade when they grow up! That's planning ahead!)

My pictures posted on Flickr here: http://flickr.com/photos/radargeek/sets/72157608429173233/

A lot of great pics here: http://flickr.com/groups/ghoulsgonewild2008/pool/

Vid game post and lonely

I've just seen the new guitar hero clip. This newest edition will be like Rockband and have new drumset, new guitar, and a regular mic.

It even supports making your own tracks, and sharing them with others to play. Another online feature they speak of is dueling 4-player bands.

All this is exciting to me, but at the same time: overwhelming. New peripherals? I've already got three guitars... New drum kit? Granted... this one does seem to have major improvements from Rockband (pressure sensitive, raised cymbals, wireless), but I'm running out of room near my TV for all these peripherals.

I enjoy the novelty (and improvements) of all the guitars and other music accessories and the interesting additions the Wii has, but I miss the days of not having to change controllers.

All my systems and games seem to require me to change controllers. This is getting old, and storage is starting to be a problem. I have been going back to games that use the original PS2 controller and classic Wii controllers that came with the system.

PS2 bargain bins and the Wii's virtual console are great for playing games old favorites and ones I never got to play (and much cheaper than newer games!!!!). And what's even better: no controller changing!

Another development of gaming came when I had kids: decrease in violence. While I would like to play the new Fallout 3 when it comes out I don't think I could get much play time as I tend to have young audience members these days. In addition to the questionable content for my younger viewers I would also need new hardware as in 'new computer'. Apart from being rather expensive this also fits in with the peripheral complaint... more 'stuff'.

Music games have been safe, but the kids often lose interest. Definitely more fun to play than to watch! Cian likes to sing on Rockband (and he does very well on a few select songs), but one or two songs and he's done. RPGs have been a family favorite. Following the adventures in Paper Mario or Dragon Quest VIII have a book feel. A new chapter opens up each day/night... new characters and places. While some of the newer RPGs have voice acting and cinematics a lot still have copius amounts of text. Soon the kids won't need my narration as they are starting to read.

(Note: Gaming for the busy parent brings up 'save game' features. I particularly enjoy games that have 'save anywhere' features. Playing for hours to reach a save point is many times impossible.)

SO NOW... everyone being gone is leaving me chapterless. The kids and I finished our subbed anime series, Future Boy Conan; and I don't want to watch ahead on the Mysterious Cities of Gold. I've got a few more games to finish that I've not beaten, but in the meantime I thought I'd write about it...

Now what..

SO... having fataly wounded cable.. It should finally be off today. What to do now. Well, we've been doing all the things we were doing before, but now doing them more. Library books, games, toys. All still here.

I've been enjoying watching series. Rose had borrowed Firefly from a friend, and we have been watching those. If you haven't seen this series you need to! I'm sure we will go into withdrawals after we finally reach the 4th disc and there is no more.

The kids had been watching Boomerang before we canceled cable. Favorites included: Banana Splits Show, Jetsons, Tom and Jerry, MGM cartoons, and many other classic TV. I wanted to watch a series with them. One that popped into my head was one serial that came on Italian TV when my folks were over there, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water. I didn't know exactly what they were saying (it was in Italian... and Chris didn't translate the whole thing to me) but I remember liking the series.

Finding it on the net proved to be difficult. Other options... Netflix whose $10-20 subscription is much cheaper than cable. Buying the DVDs on my own *ERck.. ack*

Folks had likened it to another series.. one much earlier: Future Boy Conan. I came to learn that the setting was July 2008 and knew I had to see this!! Turns out the destruction of the Earth occured in July 3rd 2008 when WWIII got out of control. Another thing it has going for it: This was Miyazaki's 1st directorial endeavor! (Having watched some of it for my own I can completely agree that this is like a 13 hour Laputa. I suppose that could be good or bad, but I enjoy it because I can watch bits of it all week.)

One of the fansites had plenty of pictures and info that sucked me right in... also had the 1st 2 episodes.

The kids and I watched the first 2 episodes and were hooked. *Note: In episode 2 Conan's grandfather dies.... This did not make for a good bedtime episode*. To redeem myself (grandpa dies and girl kidnapped was not a good way to leave a series) and prove to the kids (and me) that things were really going to get happier I tracked down the other 24 episodes.

I have to set the pace, because Cian is a marathon watcher! "No, Cian.. we need to take a break and eat. Go do something else." And even with my back turned... MWhahaha It is all subtitled!! So we have to watch it together....unless they pick up Japanese, which Jamie is now speaking in her own made up version when she plays now.

So far I'm enjoying this show immensely.

Cutting the Cable

Finally decided to cut cable all together (keeping internet function though!). It took me three calls to get it all sorted out!

They (the cable company) sure don't make it easy to quit. The first gentlemen I spoke to offered me other packages that were reduced in price... tempting, but "no". I told him the price for internet only sounded much better. He said 'ok' and that was that.... I thought.

*Call back to the house* "He said it should be taking place..". Turns out internet (the one service I kept) is not working.

ANOTHER phone call to COX. The technical support people tell me it will all be taken care of on the 4th when a man comes to the house to change a filter. ?! WTF ?! I was told it would be instantaneous. Why is someone coming to my house?? A closer look and the guy finds my router has the wrong IP address. A simple router reset and instant internet.

I hung up too early. Rose had some good questions:
So now why do I have someone coming to the house if this was just a router problem? And where do we return the boxes?

Indeed! ANOTHER phone call. I found out that cable isn't FULLY canceled. NO wonder they didn't tell me about the boxes!!! They just changed my plan to the reduced service cable!!! "We've found that when people cancel their cable they really mean just to reduce it. If you stay on reduced cable you can avoid the reconnection fee" ???Now they know what I 'intend' to do??? So they were coming to install a filter to REDUCE my cable... not ERADICATE as I had requested.

A simple 'please cut the cable and go internet only' was not enough. I had to endure more sales pitches *geez... I thought this would be simple*.
"What are you going to do for programming?"
-'Use the internet'
"In 2009 to get cable you must have a box or provider"
-'I'd like to cancel'
"Where are you going to get your news? Your programs? Weather? Stay up on current events?"
-'The internet. I'd like the internet only.'

She finally gave in and did what I asked. Three phone calls to cancel. Is it really gone? I will find out for sure when I get the next bill!

Library fun

Our Mustang public library has a bug-themed summer reading program. I'm sure I'll be back. Still uploading photos.

While waiting in the security line Anchorage airport had one thing many terminals don't: a movie to watch while you wait!! Just like at some theme parks with long lines. This was dedicated to teaching the TSA rules (baggage check screening). It costumed people portaying a moose, beaver, bear, and eagle. Each went through security and had to be reminded of the rules.

The moose (in a suit and top hat) forgot to take his shoes off and his cellphone out of his pocket.

The beaver remembered his laptop, but forgot he had a Gamecube in his bag.

The bear (my favorite) was heartbroken when he had to trash his honey because it was not in a 3oz bottle [half gallon just doesn't make it past security]. He wiped the sweat from his brow as he got the thumbs up from the TSA screener when his ziploc bag with his other liquids passed.

And last the eagle. Had to show some I.D., which had a striking picture of a bald eagle on it. Although he had his ulu's (Inuit knife that all the tourist shops sell in AK) confiscated... couldn't carry them on; he should have checked them.

I don't think most people were watching it because no one else was laughing like I was. The site up here is getting closer to commissioning (accepting the RADAR). I will post pictures up on Flickr

It began snowing on the day I arrived. I'm told the day before was crystal clear and 50 degrees. I got off the plane in a blizzard. It must have snowed a foot overnight! This was like Oklahoma's entire winter x7 in one day.

After work today I ended up taking a walk. Feeling like Forrest Gump... I kept on walking. All in all about 4+ miles... through the snow... uphill both ways. By the time I decided to turn around I really wished I had some sled dogs... I didn't realize how tiring walking through snow is!

Anyway.. more to come.

Milling around Little Rock

By some weird coincidence I found a picture of a place called "The Old Mill" in Flickr. This stuff was fantastic (knot holes and splits, etc.) These sculptures remind me of some houses I see on "World's Most Extreme Homes" or other equivalent shows.

Apparently it was also used in a scene in 'Gone with the Wind'. Before the storm came I was looking for a place to browse for D&D books. I went to a comic store (working on past experience), but found a place even better. I was directed to "The Gameroom". (9700 N Rodney Parham Rd, Little Rock, AR ) This place happens to be the perfect place for roleplaying/ card games/ board games. 2 stories of dedicated game space. After browsing I accepted an invite to play Robo Rally and it ended up being the perfect thing to do on an exceptionally rainy evening.

It just so happened that the next day was 'board game night'. So we stayed up til midnight playing "game I forgot the name but similar to Settlers of Catan", Boomtown, and Keythedral. If the kids were older I would for sure want to play these... they were pretty involved rules, but once you got a hold of them things sped up. I especially liked the Keythedral one (not just because I won), but because building your own board was pretty cool.

My further exploration of Little Rock yesterday yielded.... 'THE' Little Rock. YEs, I actually found the namesake for the city. It was more recognizable in the past when folks would use it as a landmark

, but at the moment it's covered in construction and not quite it's former self.

Dangerous roads

This seems to be a trip of danger. The family came out for a while and managed to avoid the ice storm that hit Oklahoma (and canceled Jamie's school for most of the week!).

After spending ~3 weeks here in Little Rock I've developed a pretty good mental map. There are still places I'd like to see, but working days doesn't always help. Of course that was BEFORE stepping out into the blowing-really-cold-air-and-snow-in-your-face wind. The kids instantly wanted to go back in. Not wanting to go in quite yet (getting all bundled up for a walk to the parking lot?? I don't think so), I suggested they walk behind me to block some wind.

I suppose being a skinny guy doesn't help much in this situation, and so our winter conga line was formed. I'm now back in Little Rock, AR.
Found out the day before I might be out for a week and here I am. Finally uploaded photos from my camera. So thought I'd share.

Chris, your card arrived. Jamie thought it was very cool! It arrived just after Mom left.

It now holds a place on the fridge with the other cards.

After Jamie was a year older... I quickly forgot. We were eating at our local Chinese restaurant, the Mustang Mandarin, when I was corrected by my now 6 year old. At the end of the meal they always ask how old the kids are, and I normally reply "4 and 5". Five years old is the cutoff for free meals. After our waiter left Jamie corrected me, "Dad, but I'm 6 now". DOH!! Dad the cheapskate.

So after Thanksgiving, which we stayed in town for this year (opted not to fight traffic on I-35 South), we attended a wedding up in Bartlesville. Congratulations Sue and John!

Posted the pictures in my flickr account. I apologize for the blurriness... that happens when you choose not to use a flash. It was a lot of fun. Would have loved to stay longer, but we still had a 3 hour drive home. The kids played some Mario Party DS some of the way, but then even they said they were tired.
They held out for Happy Meals about 1/2 way home, but chose to duck out after that.

And finally I thought I'd share one of Rose's dreams I found fun. After letting the dogs out one morning this week I came back in the bedroom and Rose was smiling in her sleep. So I asked what she was dreaming, and she told me in a sleepy manner. She said she was dreaming about "Trading Spaces", so I asked her if she was decorating a room or something. She replied, "I was going to teach Vern Yip to knit". :D Had to write that one down.

Birthdays and Puzzles!

This weekend was a lot of fun. I really enjoy their new Oklahoma Trails exhibit; my favorite being the enclosure w/ native birds.

The day before the Bday we went out to eat at Red Robin's and Grandpa hooked Jamie up with dessert and a song. She was glowing! She was just about to ask the waiter what was for dessert.

Next day we celebrated at home and stuffed ourselves with cake.

And while Jamie was playing with her new toys I got to finish my puzzle!

It is a contour map of Yellowstone (it even came with one!). Rose challenged me to build it without looking at the picture (which I did for ~3/4 the way). It was a refreshing puzzle after all that sky and trees from the last one :D Thank you Beth!!

Another puzzle down

I'd been 'working on' the sky portion for at least several months of this one puzzle. There are SO many people over here. If I lived over here I'd have to live close to work as commuting several hours due to traffic would not appeal to me. My hotel was ~10 minutes away from work, but the drive here from the airport was long.

I got in around 6ish, and let me tell you... driving across Sacramento at this time is not a speedy operation! I was in the exit lane for several miles (0-5mph most of time). Then it sped up to ~25-30mph. Took me about an hour and a 1/2 to drive the 25 miles to my hotel. (Hey, I live in Oklahoma I'm not used to real traffic).

The first several days I hardly left the hotel except to work (weird hours didn't help), but everything went smoothly. Got done early today and I used the remaining afternoon to beat the traffic downtown. Toured the Capital (another State Capital... I should start a list) and walked around 'Old Sac'.

The California State Capital was pretty cool in that they have done a lot of restoration and brought some of it back to the turn of the century look. Over the years there were lots of changes done to the capital to modernize it. A lot had been damaged by earthquakes and some parts were ripped out to make more room for the government (i.e. they are restoring some staircases that had previously been removed to make room for more offices... California's a big state!). After some later building projects to build some additional buildings they now have some room to make some of the capital a permanent museum. Very cool and if I had more than an afternoon (and wasn't parked in the hour parking)... I would like to have spent more time here. Was able to catch a movie in the basement and listen in on several school class tours.

I got a tip from the gal minding the early map exhibit for a place to park downtown. The mall! The only place with validation; if you bought something at a shop they would stamp your parking ticket paid... mmmm espresso gelato was a tough price to pay to park! A short walk from the mall (literally as you come out) there is a path that goes under the street to take you to "Old Sac". This is a part of town that has been restored to the gold miner era. I don't know how many shirts gold miners bought back in the day, but my guess is there was a different variety of shops then. (Current shop listing). Again, this would have been a good place to hang out... plenty of restaurants and not all the stores were typical souveniour shops. Old trains in the train yard, and several museums. Also a school class getting a tour... fought the urge to tag along and continued to explore on my own.

I stopped my downtown tour before it got too dark, but then my trip home was deja vu (except I only had half the distance to my hotel compared to from the airport). I managed to miss the biggest bottleneck (I-5 to Hwy50/80/99... yes three big roads onto one makes for LOTS of cars). Now to finish my sushi vegtable roll!

Halloween

This Halloween was different from the past ones in a few ways... one was that I was IN TOWN! Cian (who was planning on being a pirate) chose to be Link after seeing the costume Gma brought. Jamie was going to be a fairy, but with Cian being Link she decided she could be Link's fairy! Being a kindergartern teacher you hear all sorts of things. Today Jamie was drawing a Fish for the letter 'F' (amazing that it wasn't a bird!! Jamie has a portfolio full of them, and was particulary pleased when they did the letter 'O' so she could draw an owl! ) The teacher complimented Jamie on her fish who then informed her teacher that it was a piranha! So to help ease the fears the maintenance folks have some sticky spider traps in a few corners. I usually see wolf spiders that are not too big, but are similar to thin plastic spider toys.

The other day a coworker had caught something bigger than the usual and had it in his trash can. I happened to have an empty candy jar (need to refill that thing) and I scooped him up and he guarded my desk throughout the day (although he mainly looked like he despearately wanted some cover).

Brought him home and showed everyone then let him go behind the garages. After being in a candy jar for most of the day I was surprised that he stood still for pictures. After giving me ample time to play w/ camera settings and try a few things off he went.

After looking on the internet I think he is a wolf spider, but just one of the 2000+ variety of them that I am not accustomed to seeing.

SO after having seen the largest spider I thought I could see in my work space I spun around on my chair this morning and saw a large figure on the floor!! There are wares and food and chili cookoffs, music and more, but we came for the rides.

Unlike previous years the kids could now ride most of the rides without an adult with them. She rode the Rock-O-Plane and was ready for more. She took up Rose on her offer to ride the spider ride thing. Thought I'd recap what happened between leaving and now.

Traveling for radar support is highly unpredictable. Both good and bad. Bad for scheduling, but quite fun to visit people and places I normally would not be able to otherwise (of course... depending on the problem I may or may not have much time outside the radarsite).

On my way back home from Lincoln I stopped in to Manhattan, KS to visit my old friend Trevor that I hadn't seen in about 9 years. Since the last time I've seen him he's had plenty of adventures and currently he's starting a band called Trigger Sands. We drove to downtown and had us a bite to eat at Edesia's, a nice bakery/coffee/tea/etc shop.

As soon as I got back the fam and I turned around the next day and traveled to Arkansas for a weekend with friends. Rose spoke about it in her blog and uploaded all the pictures. We went to a place near Petit Jean State Park. All the other lodgings were filled and they managed to find a really sweet place! Winthrop Rockefeller Institute rented us a house. It was just the right spot for enjoying the long weekend. We went geocaching, lounged outdoors, cooking out, and even brought some video games when the outdoors was too much. I'm sure Rose loves all my bug pictures (trying out the macro on my new camera).

We will definitely have to go back.

Lincoln!

Well... My once sparsely filled Flickr account is seeing massive updates as I have a camera now. Woohoo.

So far I've been touring downtown while off work.
Yesterday it was the Capital.

Today I took in some more of downtown. Took in some of the Haymarket district, where I am staying. I really enjoy the old city feel. Not quite as old as the European cities, but it has the old city feel unique to the American cities. I enjoy looking at the buildings and original metal work, fixtures, etc.

Finally made it to Maggie's Vegetarian Wraps this time. She has changed her hours (now open later), but I actually got to eat there for lunch [ after waking up from working until 6AM ]. Lots of local ingredients, friendly service, personal atmosphere (she's not only the owner, she makes the food too!).

Got out early enough to visit the visitor center (last day they were open late for the summer). The lady there helped answer some of my history questions and suggested a shop... Ten Thousand Villages. It's a place that gets goods from all over the globe (mainly thrid world countries) and gives them a fair price for their products. Non-profit store. The owners of the shop have been doing this thing for a while, about 25 years. They started at churches and out of the way stores, but I think they really found the right place for this. sure beats their previous location in the basement.

Some pretty fun stuff. Really liked the drums, but of course those were more expensive. Had some knit finger puppets that looked awfully familiar.

This hammock would be nice if only I could find a place to hang it. I need to build my own house and have a hammock alcove.

Until next time. We'll see how many more photos I can take!

Late SPS

I'm off to Lincoln, NE this week.
