Mmmmm food

I've had this in my queue for a while. Something I heard about from NPR. A book called Hungry Planet. A guy, Menzel, photographs families around the world with the food they eat in a week. He does a lot of photography, so there are other cool books and pictures on the site too.

Maybe my library has it...

Self portrait day

My family has come over!!! woohoo. Just happened to be in the area (college touring) and they stopped by.

My dad made it back from China on a business trip. Showed us pictures and things he picked up.

I've got a ways to go before I resemble this guy, but years in a government agency may help.

Recent project

To pass the time during tv watching (and it works) Rose and I have been doing crafts on the couch. I haven't worked myself up to knitting, but I have been doing a bit of stitching. So THIS is my current project. It's pretty big.... currently I am on the upper left corner border. It's lasted me the entire winter olympics so far.

I feel guilty as a guy saying so, but.... it's rather fun.

Have you seen it?

During Rosie's Knitting Olympics we've been watching the Olympics. One of my favorite programs is Olympic Ice. It airs everyday 6pm E on USA.

Our DVR recorder always seems to cut off the final gag... teddy bear dropping from above... announcers in hockey skates getting siked.... announcer drops something on ice and one of the bee like picker uppers rises to the occasion.

Favorite ads....Emerald Nuts. Although looking them up they seem like they are from the super bowl era. I like em. Here's the Machete Enthusiasts... Druid Networking Under The Stairs.

good stuff

Foshizzle my Twizzle

Rose has been tearing her hair out as the ice dance ensues on the olympic coverage. In case you haven't been watching... a twizzle is a spin on one foot in ice skating... and there was a "twizzle section" on the ice dance pattern.

Back to our life... we finally got some snow here in OKlahoma. Very powdery, and very cold, but the kids needed to go out and experience the cold before they would leave me alone. :D So we got suited up (extra warm this time) and went to put some footprints in the snow. I'm glad that they are starting to make wise decisions on their own...sometimes. They quickly decided (Cian at least) that it was FREAKin cold outside and that we should retreat and have some hot chocolate... wise choice Cian.

Some interesting places I saw in a magazine

1. Kunsthaus Graz in Graz, Austria
this has to be one of the weirdest buildings I've seen.... and 'no' there is no aerial photography of it on Google Earth... :(
when I saw this in the magazine I thought it was a joke... some space alien taking over the city sort of thing.. .but no it's really there!

2. Secret Swiss Military Installation near Stansstad. I have had a hard time finding anything on short notice, but apparently the Swiss (even though they were neutral) had a lot of tunnels and bunkers they could hide out in. The magazine...if I remeber right... said you could stay there. Kind of related link

Another Su nday portrait

This was taken when the kids and I went outside for a walk. It was a bad idea... too cold and we weren't dressed for it.

Note: wear heavy coats and gloves and mittens when cold.

Stuff I learned this week

-Mother nature does harsh things to primary radar out in the California Valley

-'Very Vanilla' Soy milk should NOT be used to make macaroni and cheese (Cian didn't seem to mind though)

-Norman/OKC has a french bakery that has ghkjfdisjfk... selection is so good and overwhelming I can't even type it La Baguette mmmm gelato...chocolate...glah

-My blue Ford Contour is Aunt Sarah's car (Cian tells me this all the time just thought I'd include it)

Home/ Self portrait Sunday

I made it home and got my pictures printed. I'll probably scan more eventually and post them here later. Today I was going to join the crowd and post a self-portrait of traveling me on an escalator in the Memphis airport.

It's only Wednesday!

Since I got here on Sunday it already feels like we have been here longer... and we have... than a regular Mon-Fri trip. Working nights has made it difficult to keep the days straight. Tonight, however, we get a break! don't have to be in until tomorrow morning. So currently waiting for Rosie to see if I can't get a game of Magic the Gathering in.

I had the opportunity to visit my Aunt Hap who lives on Sanibel Island the other day. I should have visited here more often when my cousins lived here. She was going to leave, but she hadn't any renters yet, so she stayed to get more stuff done. Went for a walk on the beach to collect shells. I don't think I have seen any beach with so many shells on it!

They are in piles along the ground! Some was due to some 'beach reconstruction' going on. They were pumping sand from out in the ocean over there to replenish the sand taken away thanks to the Captiva wave breaker wall thing (makes eddys etc. that wash away the sand). After a sunset it was off to the Lazy Flamingo to take in the local eats. The picture from Google Earth is probably before the hurricane.. cause I don't remember so many trees.

Today I was able to catch up on sleep after leaving the site at 3AM. And this place... Riva del Lago... is right behind our stay (Crestwood Suites... good extended stay prices during peak season). I noticed that there were lots of workers, but tonight there were lots of cars leaving... and not workers cars. I went over to check it out, and it happened to be a 'welcome residents' party. I missed the snacks, but there was still a piano man... art... examples and photos of the furnishings.. and information. If I had $300,000 to $1,000,000 maybe I could get a place like that...
